Kahului Airport
Kahului Airport,1 Keolani PI, Kahului, HI 96732, United StatesFacts and History about Kahului Airport
Kahului Airport, also referred to as Maui Airport, (IATA: OGG, ICAO: PHOG) is the second busiest airport in the state of Hawaii. It is a regional airport that serves inter-island flights and flights from mainland North America.
The airport is located on the northern part of the island of Maui, the second largest of the Hawaiian Islands, just east of the town of Kahului in between the West Maui mountain range and the Haleakala Crater. The airport has been a commercial airport offering full airport operations since 1952.
The Honolulu-Kahului air corridor is one of the heaviest-trafficked routes in the US and most flights coming into Kahului Airport originate from Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu.
The IATA code, OGG, stems from the aviation pioneer Bertram James “Jimmy” Hogg’s last name. When the Civil Aeronautics Authority established the code in 1957, in honour of Hogg who was born in Kauai, it was decided to be OGG rather than HOG. Hogg is an important part of the history of aviation on the island. Having started as a mechanic helper for Inter-Island Airways in 1930, that later became Hawaiian Airlines, he flew the first inter-island airmail flights as early as in 1934 and he also trained other pilots. Only days after Pearl Harbor was bombed in 1941 Hogg flew important passengers from island to island without any instruments for their safety. Hogg retired in 1968 and at that time he was flying jets with more than 100 passengers, and even though the OGG code in his honour had been in place for more than a decade he never made a big deal out of it. Hogg later moved to California where he died in 1992 at the age of 84.
The official authority of Kahului Airport is the Governor of Hawaii, who appoints the Director of the Hawaii State Department of Transportation, with jurisdiction over the Hawaii Airports Administrator who oversees six governing bodies who in their turn have authority over the four airport districts: Hawaii District, KauaI District, Maui District and the principal Oahu District. In turn, Kahului Airport is a subordinate of Maui District.

Kahului Airport Terminal
Kahului Airport has one terminal building separated into two terminals, one Commuter terminal, Gates 1 and 2, servicing smaller and shorter inter-island flights, and one main terminal/Overseas servicing the mainland and the bigger inter-island flights. The security control is the same for both terminals and is located in between them.
On each side of the security check in the main terminal is the ticketing lobby for the Overseas terminal and on the other is baggage claim for arriving passengers. The center houses a promenade with a Garden and access to level 2 for those who have cleared security.
Level 2 houses the Gates and the central building which holds cocktail lounges, restaurants, shops, newsstands and VIP Lounges.
The gates are divided into north and south areas where the south houses Gates 1-16 and the north houses Gates 17-39. Only odd number gates have jetway systems and even numbers are designated as emergency exits with stairs that lead to the ramp below.
Gates 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19 and 21 are dedicated for inter-island flights, and Gates 1, 5, 7, 23, 27, 29, 33, 35 and 39 are dedicated for overseas flights.
Gates 3, 25, 31 and 37 are rarely used because of the spacing for more narrow-bodied aircraft that are only used for inter-island flights. While all gates fit the smaller sized aircraft, not that many are needed, and only some gates fit the wide-body aircraft used for the overseas flights.
Kahului Airport has 2 asphalt runways, Runway 2 – 6.995 ft/2,132 m and Runway 5 – 4,990 ft/1,521 m, and an asphalt helipad. In 2010 the airport operated 118,896 aircraft and had 5,346,694 passengers pass through, as well as 40,015 US tons of cargo.
Airlines that fly through Kahului Airport are Hawaiian Airlines, Air Canada, Delta Airlines, American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, US Airways, United Airlines, Virgin America, West Jet, and the domestic, inter-island, airlines Mokulele Express and Makani Kai. Check-in for the domestic airlines is located in the Commuter Terminal while the check-in for the other airlines are located in the Main Terminal. Kahului Airport serves as a hub for Hawaiian Airlines.
